The challenge is not what you can do. It is how to show it in a way that makes sense to someone who has never worked in the health service. This checklist covers the four areas that make the biggest difference when preparing to move from the NHS into the private sector.
1. CV Translation
Your NHS CV probably uses language that makes sense inside the NHS but means little to a commercial employer. The goal is to reframe it, not remove it.
- Strip out NHS-specific jargon. Replace acronyms and banding references with plain descriptions of what you did.
- Translate responsibilities into achievements. Write what you delivered, not what your role involved. Use numbers where possible.
- Lead with transferable skills. Leadership, project management, stakeholder engagement, budget responsibility, change management.
- Keep it to two pages. Cut anything that does not support the roles you are targeting.
- Write a summary that positions you. Speak to where you are going, not where you have been.
- Get a second pair of eyes. Ask someone outside the NHS to read it. If they understand in 30 seconds, you are on track.
2. LinkedIn Update
LinkedIn is where private sector recruiters search. If your profile reads like an internal NHS document, you are invisible.
- Update your headline. Replace your job title with what you offer.
- Rewrite your About section. First person, conversational, explain what you do and what you want.
- Translate your experience entries. Focus on outcomes, not process.
- Add a professional photo. Clear, approachable headshot on a neutral background.
- Turn on Open to work. Set to recruiters only to stay discoverable.
- Connect outside the NHS. Build a network in your target sectors.
3. Interview Prep
Private sector interviews are less structured, more conversational, and focus on commercial awareness.
- Research the company. Know what they do, their clients, their challenges.
- Prepare competency answers. Use STAR format. Have five or six examples ready.
- Practice without jargon. Talk about your experience with someone outside healthcare.
- Prepare for why are you leaving. Be positive and forward-looking.
- Understand commercial awareness. Budgets, ROI, efficiency, bottom line.
- Do a mock interview. Practice with someone who interviews in the private sector.
4. Job Search Strategy
The private sector market works differently. Networking matters more and roles are advertised in different places.
- Set up alerts. Use transferable skill keywords on LinkedIn and Indeed.
- Look beyond job boards. Use your network, specialist agencies, direct approaches.
- Tailor every application. Adjust for each role and company.
- Track your applications. Spreadsheet: company, role, date, status, follow-up.
- Follow up. No response in a week, send a polite follow-up.
- Consider interim roles. Good way to build private sector experience.
